Biography
A/Prof Michael Talbot is a Specialist in Bariatric, Upper Gastrointestinal and Therapeutic Endoscopic Surgery with expertise in Oesophageal Physiology and Reflux. After completing his medical degree at the University of Otago in 1992 and surgical training at St Vincents then St George Hospital Sydney, he achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2001 and undertook subspecialty training as the Lister Lecturer in Surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, UK.
He returned to Sydney in 2003 as a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at UNSW and Consultant Surgeon at St George and Wollongong Hospitals, where he remains in practice. A/Prof Talbot is Head of Upper GI Surgery at St George Hospital, Chair of Surgery and the Medical Advisory Committee at St George Private Hospital, and a past President of the ANZ Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society.
A pioneer of complex bariatric and robotic gastrointestinal surgery, he performed Australasia’s first robotic bariatric and oesophageal procedures including gastric bypass and oesophagectomy. He directs NSW’s longest-established High-Resolution Oesophageal Diagnostic Laboratory and is SRC-accredited as a Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
An active educator and researcher, he supervises surgical trainees, contributes to RACS programs, and continues to publish and review extensively in his field.
